For the 2025 Masters, legendary golfer Tiger Woods had to withdraw due to an injury. His achilles tendon ruptured, and he went through surgery for it. He can barely walk at the moment. Longtime golf fans will miss him during the Masters but won’t be holding it over him. This is not the only event he withdrew from; in March, he withdrew from the Players Championship. However, upon hearing this news, Brandel Chamblee, a golf commentator, had other thoughts on the situation.
What Did Brandel Chamblee Say
In the past few years, Woods’s injuries have been hampering his career. After leaving his mark with 15 major golfing titles, he’s been very up and down with his wins, with some years being better than others. When Chamblee heard the news while considering Woods’s history, he dubbed the golfer the “most underachieving golfer in history.” He said this after lamenting how these injuries come about on the Skip Bayless Show. The conversation started when Skip Bayless said this about Woods:
“It just tears me up to think about how some of his injuries were self-inflicted after he dominated this game the way nobody has.”
Chamblee does believe that Woods is one of the greatest golfers in the history of the game. In the 2000’s he was a household name and the face of the PGA. However, he only won a single Major title in the past 17 years of his career.
“I would say he’s the most underachieving golfer in the history of the game. And the way I get there is, I can think of no other golfer who left 10 to 15 major championships on the table.”
Chamblee continually reiterates that he thinks Tiger Woods is one of the best.
Tiger Woods Now
In the current year, Tiger Woods has only won a few events. Since 2013, he has placed first in the 2018 Tour Championship, 2019 Masters, and 2019 Zozo Championship. Before 2013, just looking on the PGA website, a clear spike in victories can be seen. The height of Woods’s career is present, and then massive gaps between single victories after 2013. The last one of note in the list is the 2019 Zozo. Now, he is struggling to make events between injuries.
Questions on Tiger Woods
Chamblee’s criticism does bring up something important about Tiger Woods. It seems that he is past his prime. Tiger Woods is still a major player in the PGA, even representing the league. However, his performance has been lacking, and it’s not the 2000s anymore. Woods has been long surpassed by other players, and now the next generation is competing with them. He has made an impact.
At the time of writing, Woods has played in 378 events with 82 PGA wins. He is still the face of the PGA, and anyone who even has a bare-bones basic knowledge of the sport recognizes his name. For a lot of people in the 2000s, the man was golf. His name was on PGA games, merch, he’s on the PGA board. He met with the president to discuss the PGA-LIV merger. Tiger Woods has made his name in the sport, and although his time playing may be coming to an end, in the words of Brandel Chamblee, “Tiger was nothing if not a genius.”
