Three scholarship players from the 2024-25 IU men’s basketball roster have chosen new schools.

Mike Woodson stepped down from his position as IU’s coach after the 2024-25 season and Darian DeVries was hired on March 18.

Shortly after DeVries was hired, seven scholarship players entered the transfer portal.

The three Hoosiers who have made commitments are Jakai Newton, Malik Reneau and Gabe Cupps.

Cupps was the first to choose a new school. The former Ohio Mr. Basketball committed to Ohio State on March 26. The 6-foot-2 played in just four games this season for the Hoosiers and played a total of 25 minutes without registering a point.

As a freshman, he appeared in 33 games for Indiana and averaged 2.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 21.6 minutes per game.

Malik Reneau, an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection, committed to Miami (FL) on April 2. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 13.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and two assists in 23.2 minutes per game.

Over 94 career games for the Hoosiers, Reneau averaged 11.4 points, five rebounds and 1.8 assists in 22.1 minutes per game.

And this morning, former IU guard Jakai Newton announced his commitment to Georgia State. Newton spent two injury-plagued seasons in Bloomington and appeared in four games for the Hoosiers.

Four players from last season’s roster remain in the transfer portal: Mackenzie Mgbako, Bryson Tucker, Kanaan Carlyle and Myles Rice.
