The curse of the US Open has struck again. At Oakmont, a free weekend for the likes of DeChambeau, Rose, Aberg, Lowry, Niemann, Johnson, Thomas and Mickelson. In fact, none of them made the cut (even +7) at the 2025 US Open. McIlroy only managed to do so on the 18th. Sam Burns is currently the leader.
Us Open, results
Oakmont thus confirms the tradition that this competition is the most difficult of the year. Suffice it to say that there are only three professionals still under par. One of these is Sam Burns, at the top (-3 total) thanks to a great last hole and author of an excellent second round in 65 shots (-5 for the day). Burns, on the course in the morning with overcast skies and little wind, was a birdie machine: six in total, all within three meters, thanks to irons as precise as a scalpel.
The American has a one-shot advantage over J.J. Spaun, who lost the lead with a bogey on the 18th (72 the partial). Third under par is Viktor Hovland (68 strokes Friday, -1 total). He and Burns have shot 11 holes under par each in the first two rounds: no one has done better in the three US Opens played at Oakmont since, in 2007, it returned to being a par 70.
Behind them in fourth, on par with the course, Adam Scott (in his 96th consecutive appearance in a Major, signed another 70) and Ben Griffin (71).
All this before disaster struck from the clouds over Oakmont late Friday afternoon. But the real disaster was also seen on the course. The cut has not yet been made official but the game is now over as there are no players close to the cut among those called to complete the round.
We've seen some great things. Rory McIlroy threw an iron in anger and destroyed a tee marker. He will be "punished": he will play two more rounds of the US Open 2025 thanks to the birdie on the 18th that allowed him to stay in the tournament.
Shane Lowry, distracted like any newbie, picked up the ball on the green of the 14th without first placing the marker. Under Rule 14.1, the Irishman was assessed a one-stroke penalty. That shot made him miss the cut.
Phil Mickelson, perhaps at the last US Open of his career (the 34th): at three-quarters of the way through he was almost in the top 20 but ruined everything with two double bogeys in the last four holes (74), missing the cut.
The heaviest elimination was that of Bryson DeChambeau, the favorite on the eve like Scottie Scheffler. His statement at the beginning of the week sounds prophetic: "Oakmont is not like Winged Foot". On that course in 2020 he had won by a landslide with bombs from the tee shot and stones from the fairway. This time DeChambeau did not get the better of the course and will be absent from the final rounds of the 2025 US Open for the first time since 2017 at Erin Hills.
Scottie Scheffler, fresh from three victories in the last four competitions, played his sixth consecutive round over par at the 2025 US Open. His 71 leaves him seven shots behind Burns. “The way I was hitting today, it was easy to go home,” he said. “I fought hard to stay in the competition. I’m at +4, we’ll see where the leader will be at the end of the day. But on this course, I certainly don’t feel out of the tournament.”
Nothing to do for the three Italians who had earned a spot at the 2025 US Open. Edoardo Molinari finished at +8 on par, 68th, missing out on access to the last two days by just one shot. On the difficult American course, Migliozzi (+18) and Pavan (+19) did much worse.
