The Mariners somehow found their way into the crosshairs during the Yankees-Brewers game on Saturday, thanks to Suzyn Waldman.
The longtime Yankees radio voice on WFAN took some shots at newcomer Dave Sims’ old team during the Yankees’ 20-9 win against Milwaukee that included a team record nine home runs.
“Your old team didn’t score 13 runs in a month,” Waldman joked to Sims during the broadcast.
Over the past few seasons, the Mariners have been known for their poor offense, which has often held them back from greater success.
Last season, Seattle placed only above the 121-loss White Sox in batting average, hitting just .224 as a team.
The Mariners also had bottom-10 finishes in hits, doubles, home runs and slugging percentage.
Seattle finished last season with one of the best pitching staffs in the majors, leading the league in team ERA, WHIP and hits per nine innings.
The Mariners have seemed to bring last season’s offensive struggles into 2025 as the team got shut out by the A’s on Friday night, garnering just five hits in a 7-0 loss.
Waldman’s comments came as Jazz Chisholm blasted a home run in the third inning, which marked the Yankees’ 13th run of the game.
Saturday’s game was lopsided from the beginning, with Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs on three pitches to open things against former Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes.
Cortes, who had multiple stints with the Yankees, was traded to the Brewers ahead of the 2025 season for closer Devin Williams.
“The way it ended, I think it’s going to be something that not only them but myself have to live with. Obviously, it didn’t go the way that we wanted to,” Cortes said on Friday about the team’s 2024 World Series loss. “But overall, the … four and a half years I was in the big leagues with the Yankees, I can take a lot of positives.
