Pirelli’s compound picks for F1 Monaco, Montreal and Barcelona: variety and spectacle

The European leg of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship kicks off this weekend with the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola’s Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit, but Pirelli is already looking beyond the Emilia event.

This morning, the Milan-based company, Formula 1’s exclusive tyre supplier, announced the compounds that will be used in the Grands Prix taking place between the end of May and early June.

We’re talking about the Monaco, Spain, and Canada Grands Prix. Across these three events, teams will use all six compounds developed by Pirelli for this season.

At the Monaco Grand Prix—held as usual on the historic Monte Carlo street circuit—and at the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal’s Gilles Villeneuve circuit, Pirelli will supply the three softest compounds from its 2025 range: the C4, C5, and C6.

As has become tradition, the Spanish Grand Prix at Montmeló in Barcelona will feature the three hardest compounds: C1, C2, and C3.

It’s important to note that Pirelli’s compound selection for the Monaco Grand Prix is one step softer than last year’s. This has been made possible by the track’s low severity, the almost certain lack of overtaking opportunities, and the low top speeds expected during the weekend.

However, it should be remembered that in Monte Carlo this year, teams will be required to make at least two pit stops. The rule requiring the use of at least two different compounds during the race will also remain in force.

The scenario is quite different at Montreal’s Gilles Villeneuve circuit. The Canadian street track offers very high top speeds and significant longitudinal forces. It will therefore be a much tougher test for Pirelli’s three softest compounds this season.

Meanwhile, the tyre choice for Montmeló is straightforward. The Catalan circuit is one of the most demanding on tyres due to its layout (very fast, long-duration corners) and the high temperatures, which encourage thermal degradation.

As mentioned, Barcelona will feature the C1, C2, and C3 compounds—a trio already used this year by Pirelli at the Japanese GP (Suzuka) and the Bahrain GP (Sakhir).
