Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final wasn’t short on action, and Brad Marchand made sure of that. The Florida Panthers came away with a strong 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, but the veteran forward’s ejection stole most of the postgame spotlight.

Brad Marchand Ejected After Scrappy Altercation in Panthers’ Game 1 Win

The incident happened late in the third period. Marchand and Hurricanes defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere got tangled up after what looked like building tensions along the boards. Gostisbehere, clearly irritated, reportedly fired the puck at Marchand.

That led to a quick, scrappy exchange as Marchand dropped the gloves and took the defenseman to the ice. Officials didn’t hesitate, however, and Marchand was hit with a 10-minute misconduct and two minor roughing penalties, ending his night early. Gostisbehere got a single roughing minor.

When asked about it, Panthers coach Paul Maurice gave a short but telling response.

“Yeah, I’ve got one,” he said. “I’ll be keeping that to myself.”

Florida was already in control by then, leading 4-1, so the penalties didn’t impact the final result. The Panthers killed off the time and even scored a fifth goal.

Gostisbehere didn’t deny what happened.

“He tried to take a run at me, I shot the puck at him,” he said after the game. “It is what it is. Had a little tussle.”

Marchand Sets the Tone in Fiery Series Opener

Marchand is no stranger to stirring the pot, and in Game 1, he leaned into that role again. His night ended early, but his presence was felt from the start.

In these playoffs, Marchand has three goals and nine assists in 13 games. But it’s his 46 penalty minutes and physical edge that have defined his role this postseason.

His quick reaction to Gostisbehere sent a clear message. Whether fans see it as retaliation or provocation, Marchand helped set the emotional tone for the series — something he’s done for years.

Even without him in the final minutes, the Panthers didn’t slow down. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky stood tall, making 31 saves on 33 shots. He reportedly took a hit to the head from Andrei Svechnikov but stayed in the game.

So far, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety hasn’t announced any further discipline from the altercation, and Marchand looks to be available for Game 2. Florida will try to ride the momentum when the puck drops Thursday night in Carolina. If Game 1 was any sign, this series is just heating up.
