Tabilo Tops Wawrinka

There’ll be no Djokovic vs Wawrinka in Monte Carlo as Alejandro Tabilo came through a topsy-turvy battle against the Swiss, recording a 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 in an entertaining match on Court Rainier III at the Principality.

The 27-year-old Chilean, who lost a heartbreaker to Jenson Brooksby in Houston last week, hasn’t had a good time on clay recently, but he showed resilience to fight back and despite squandering a 5-3 lead in the decider he sealed the win on his third match point after two hours and 34 minutes.

Wawrinka, the 2014 champion making his 15th Monte-Carlo appearance, has picked up some decent wins in recent weeks on the clay. He looked sharp early, overpowering Tabilo with his trademark heavy groundstrokes.

But Tabilo is a battler, and Stan doesn’t seem able to maintain a high level through the course of a match. After letting a 4-5 chance slip, Tabilo held firm at 6-5, converting his third match point with a pinpoint forehand that left Wawrinka stranded.

Medvedev Advances

Daniil Medvedev hasn’t looked like much of a hard-court specialist in recent months, so the transition to clay might be a good thing and he shook off his Miami loss with a gritty 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Karen Khachanov.

Meddy is now out of the top 10 in the rankings but has the wood over his compatriot (7-2 H2H after today), and looked poised for a routine win early, racing to a 5-1 lead in the first set.

However, Khachanov is no pushover on clay, and he started to come out on top in the longer rallies, clawing his way back to level at 5-5 before Medvedev steadied the ship and snatched it 7-5.

The second set followed a similar script with Meddy surging to a 4-1, only for Khachanov to win most of the extended rallies, forcing a decider by claiming the set 6-4.

In the third, Medvedev found an extra gear, mixing his consistent baseline hitting with clever drop shots to edge ahead. He broke at 4-4 and served out the match 6-4.

After sealing his win, Medvedev limped to the net and got the umpire to call the trainer, where he was treated for cramps in his thigh so he did well to close out the last couple of points.

Other Matches of Note

Jiri Lehecka missed most of last season’s clay swing with injury, but he looked sharp on his return to the surface in a 6-3, 7-6(7) win over Sebastian Korda.

He’ll now face Lorenzo Musetti, who staged a gritty comeback against Chinese qualifier Buyunchaokete, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Musetti was set and a break down but found his rhythm, using his one-handed backhand to dictate rallies and turn the tide in a two-hour, 28-minute grind.

Gael Monfils keeps on winning, bagging a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over qualifier Fabian Marozsan. The Frenchman is now 6-2 at Masters 1000 events in 2025. La Monf now faces seventh seed Andrey Rublev, who is playing his first match with Marat Safin in his corner.

Daniel Altmaier ousted 16th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(5), 6-3. Felix has struggled to perform at the M1000 level this season, and Altmaier will now face Richard Gasquet after he beat Arnaldi on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Matteo Berrettini made a solid start, dispatching Argentine clay specialist Mariano Navone 6-4, 6-4 to set up a match with Sascha Zverev. While Marcos Giron showed he enjoys playing Denis Shapovalov, extending his H2H to 3-1 thanks to a 6-3, 7-6(5) win.

Former finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina battled back to oust 11th seed Ben Shelton 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1. The Spaniard, runner-up in 2022, used his heavy topspin and relentless defense to get the job done, winning 10 of the last 11 games to advance, preventing Shelton from fashioning a single game point on his serve for six games straight from 2-0 in the second.
