Mirra Andreeva says she is "super excited" to have a chance to play Coco Gauff again and see if she can do much better this time and possibly clinch her first win against the 2023 US Open champion.
In 2023 – when Andreeva impressively introduced herself to the tennis world when she was just 15 – she twice met Gauff. And in their first meeting at the French Open, the Russian even came close to pulling off a big upset but ultimately lost in three sets. A couple of months later, she also fell short to the American at the US Open.
Now, they are set to meet in the Madrid quarterfinal. Since their last meeting, the Russian has established herself as one of the best in the world as she now has two WTA 1000 titles in her collection and is also a top-10 player.
Andreeva on facing Gauff: I'm super excited… I think it's going be to be an entertaining match
“Last time I faced her on clay was Roland Garros 2023. The first set was tight, but the rest of the match was like ehhh. She didn’t give me a chance. But it was two years ago, so I’m just super excited to not take revenge but to see how different I play. I think it’s going to be an entertaining match," the world No. 7 said ahead of her next match.
So far in Madrid, Andreeva has had straight-set wins over Marie Bouzkova, Magdalena Frech and Yulia Starodubtseva. If she wins, she will make her first Madrid semifinal.
“This year, going to try to advance further. I’m going to do everything possible to win this," the Russian underlined.
Gauff may have a 2-0 record against Andreeva but there is no doubt that the American will be preparing for the Russian in a completely different way this time.
