Day four at the Miami Open turned the draw upside down, with Indian Wells finalists Jack Draper and Holger Rune both crashing out at the first hurdle.

They weren’t the only high-profile names to fall—Andrey Rublev, Ben Shelton, Ugo Humbert, Alexei Popyrin, and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard all stumbled in their openers, leaving the top half of the draw wide open.

There was also some scheduling controversy, with Fonseca being moved to the Stadium Court at the last minute

Check the highlights of Jakub Mensik’s tiebreak masterclass, Coleman Wong’s breakthrough, Zizou Bergs’ upset, and Alexander Zverev’s solid start below.

Mensik Downs Draper

Jakub Mensik brought Jack Draper’s six-match winning streak to a halt on Saturday, delivering a decisive 7-6(2), 7-6(3).

Draper’s heavy game shined throughout his Indian Wells title run, but he struggled to find a way through Mensik, who outgunned the Brit with two razor-sharp tiebreaks.

Mensik seems to raise his level against top 10 opposition, and he now holds a 6-5 record. The Czech banged down 21 aces, including four in the first tiebreaker.

Mensik now faces Roman Safiullin, a 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-5 comeback winner over Alexei Popyrin.

The most important thing today was the serve, that was key. I knew in the second set, it was going to be tough at the 30/30 moments and in the tie-break, so I just tried to stay focused. I’m super glad that I kept the focus until the end. Hopefully I will keep rising as I am. It is my first [full] year on the ATP Tour, so I am just enjoying every moment playing against these top guys. Jack has been playing incredibly the last weeks, months. I knew that it was an opportunity for me, so I took it. Mensik on his win over Draper.

Zverev Makes Solid Start

zverevzverev

Sascha Zverev hasn’t been in top form since his Australian Open final defeat, but he started Miami with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jacob Fearnley.

The German’s success over the last year or so has been largely thanks to his improved serve. He made 42 of 47 first serves, reminding everyone why he’s a perennial threat when that shot clicks.

Fearnley, now firmly in the top 100, has an aggressive, forehand-driven game, but Zverev snuffed it out cold with his metronomic baseline game.

Next up: Jordan Thompson, who battled past Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6(4), 7-6(1).

I’m generally happy with my level today. In Indian Wells it was very different, so I hope I can continue playing this way and have a great week here. I have generally been serving badly, especially after the Australian Open. It’s a shot I’ve worked on since Indian Wells; I had more than two weeks since I lost early there… Of course, I’m happy with the win today, but hopefully, this is just the start of the tournament, and hopefully, I can go deep here. Zverev on his win.

Other Matches of Note

Coleman Wong’s dramatic victory over 13th seed Shelton was another big story of the day. Wong’s resilience in a match with no breaks of serve until the second set showcased his big-stage mettle. Shelton made several gestures that Miami “was his court,” but Wong got the job done, leaving the American with an egg on his face. He’ll face Adam Walton next, who quietly took out Luciano Darderi.

Zizou Bergs produced a top-tier performance against the struggling Rublev. Bergs dictated play with aggressive baseline hitting to secure his first top 10 win. He’ll face Alex de Minaur next, who advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Yunchaokete Bu.

After his debut win over Learner Tien, Fonseca continued to impress, striking 27 forehand winners and winning 22 of 31 net points in his victory over Ugo Humbert. He’ll face Matteo Berrettini next, who battled past Hugo Gaston 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Reilly Opelka upset 11th seed Rune in a third-set tiebreak. Opelka fired 14 aces and clinched the match in a tense breaker. Rune looked back to his old self, showing frustration as he failed to counter Opelka’s firepower. Opelka now faces Tomas Machac, who defeated Matteo Arnaldi 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
