The Miami Open 2025 round of 128 concluded on Thursday, and it was a poor day for the American contingent, with four of the five in action losing.

One of those was inevitable as Reilly Opelka defeated wildcard Christopher Eubanks, but Giron, Tien and Brooksby fell at the first hurdle.

Tien was part of the most anticipated match of the day against Joao Fonseca, with the Brazilian prevailing in three sets in front of a fervent crowd.

Conversely, the Italians enjoyed a successful round as Arnaldi, Sonego, and Dardieri prevailed. Flavio Cobollio spoiled the 100% record, and since the United Cup, he’s lost in the first round of seven consecutive tournaments—a disaster record.

Full results and highlights are below.

Fonseca Tops Tien

Fresh off a Challenger 175 title in Phoenix and a career-high No. 60 in the ATP Rankings, Joao Fonseca thrilled the predominantly pro-Latin American crowd at the Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday, pulling off a 6-7(1), 3-6, 6-4 comeback win over Learner Tien.

Miami can be turned into a carnival atmosphere whenever someone from South America plays, and there were Brazilian flags galore as Fonseca bolted out of the gate, breaking early with his punishing forehand.

However, we saw earlier this season that Tien is the brick wall out there, and he turned it around, absorbing Fonseca’ ‘s power and hitting back with precise groundstrokes to snatch the first set on a tiebreak 7-1.

Momentum was now on the American’s side. Still, at 1-2 in the second set, he committed a costly double fault, and Fonseca took full advantage, maintaining the advantage to take the second set 6-3.

When leading 3-2 the decider with a break in hand, Fonseca suddenly called for the doctor, dizzy and on the verge of vomiting.

After a six-minute pause and some pills, he maintained the break, and despite cramping in the last game, he held firm to move into a 3-0 H2H lead.

I knew it was going to be a difficult match. Learner’s a great fighter—he knows how to play, he’s very smart. I needed to go until the end, and I just went for it hard. The Brazilian crowd was with me today. I always try to be aggressive with my forehand. When I was younger, I’d go for it on big points and hit the fence. Now I’m working to be aggressive and solid. In the important moments, I trust it. Fonseca on his win over Tien.

Other Matches of Note

In other action, Jakub Mensik overcame Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 after hammering 23 aces and winning 84 per cent of his first-serve points.

Italians Lorenzo Sonego, Matteo Arnaldi and Luciano Darderi all advanced. Sonego ousted Mariano Navone 7-5, 7-5 to set a second-round clash with third seed Taylor Fritz. Arnaldi overcame Wu Yibing 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3, while Darderi raced past Pedro Martinez 6-4, 6-1.

Reilly Opelka’s return to Masters 1000 action after two years saw the big-serving American edging out wildcard Eubanks in a tight second-set tiebreak. He’s got Matteo Berrettini next, so expect more of a serve-fest.

The upset of the day? Bu Yunchaokete taking down Norrie in straight sets. Norrie, a former Top 10 stalwart, couldn’t find an answer, and if Bu replicates his clean-hitting display, he could cause Taylor Fritz problems in round 2.
