On Thursday, March 13, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) dropped a colossal injury update on the veteran right-arm express pacer Mark Wood.

The ECB confirmed that Mark Wood has undergone a successful knee surgery and he would be out of action for at least four months.

Mark Wood got injured during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Wood was recently seen in action in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 where the England National Cricket Team had an awful campaign under the leadership of Jos Buttler.

The Three Lions finished at the bottom of the table in their group and were the only team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to finish their campaign without a single point. Also, the disastrous run of England in white-ball cricket for an extended period forced Jos Buttler to relinquish his captaincy.

Talking about Mark Wood, the dangerous pacer was quite expensive in his first match of the competition against Australia as he leaked 75 runs and bagged just one wicket.

Then, in the second match against the Afghanistan National Cricket Team, the express pacer sustained a knee injury at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

After bowling a few overs, he started feeling discomfort and left the field. Later, he returned to the field and despite limping, he contributed with a few overs. Overall, he bowled 8 overs in the match and gave away 50 runs, going wicketless.

I’m gutted to be out for so long – Mark Wood

In an official statement issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), it was mentioned that Wood has been ruled out of all cricket for four months after scans and subsequent surgery confirmed ligament damage to his left knee.

ECB also revealed that the express pacer had managed a knee issue for over a year but experienced increased stiffness and discomfort during the Afghanistan clash.

Meanwhile, Mark Wood said that he is gutted to be ruled out of cricket for a long period and thanked his surgeon, the doctors, staff, England teammates, and coaches for their support.

“I’m gutted to be out for so long after representing England across all formats since the start of last year,” said Wood. “But I’ve got every confidence that I’ll be back firing on all cylinders now that I’ve been able to sort my knee out.

“I want to thank the surgeon, the doctors, staff, my England teammates and coaches for their support – and, of course, our fans. I can’t wait to get back and contribute to what is going to be a huge 2025 for us as a team.”

Mark Wood is not part of the IPL

Wood being ruled out of cricket for four months won’t have any impact in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he is not part of any franchise in the marquee T20 league.

He had registered for the mega auction but couldn’t get himself shortlisted in the final list as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) didn’t grant him the NOC to feature in the league.

Meanwhile, Mark Wood will now work closely with the ECB medical team on his rehabilitation and recovery and will be aiming to make his comeback to competitive cricket by the end of July 2025.
