Josh Hart Admits ‘He Had a Hand’ in His Game 3 Benching

In a pivotal Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Josh Hart made a selfless decision that exemplified his team-first mentality.

Recognizing the need for a strategic shift, Hart approached Coach Tom Thibodeau with a proposal: insert Mitchell Robinson into the starting lineup and he come off the bench.

This adjustment aimed to bolster the Knicks’ defense and address early-game struggles.

“I’ve been the 15th man, I’ve been the third man, I’ve been the sixth man, I’ve been whatever,” Hart stated.

He added: “It was something that I’ve had in the back of my mind, and I’ve always wanted to do. Down 0-2, especially with how [Robinson] played last game, that was something that we had to do. And obviously that’s a group decision that really boils down to Thibs and myself…

“It was never going to be a tough day for me because I had a hand in that decision. When I’m in a decision like that and kind of got the ball rolling on that, it was funny. Y’all [the media] are scrambling, trying to get answers, and I never really cared because it was kind of my decision. I was comfortable with it.” (via New York Daily News)

The change paid dividends. Hart contributed 8 points and 10 rebounds over 34 minutes, providing energy and stability off the bench. His efforts were instrumental in the Knicks’ comeback from a 20-point deficit, culminating in a 106-100 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

Teammate Jalen Brunson praised Hart’s unselfishness, noting that such decisions are vital for team cohesion and success.

“That’s Josh. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to help us win,” Brunson said. “A lot of guys wouldn’t volunteer to come off the bench in a playoff game. That’s not him. He’s about the team.”
