Callum Smith spends a few minutes talking to iFL TV about the arrangements of his next fight and answers questions about rumors of him being in talks to possibly fight David Benavidez. Smith says his promoter will be holding some meetings this week to see how talks progress but he remains confident that he’ll be in a good matchup no matter who he ends up facing next at light heavyweight.
Smith on a potential fight with Benavidez
“I don’t know, Eddie (Hearn) said he got a few meetings this week and he’ll let me know what the plan is. I’ve had a bit of a rest after my fights, I’m back in the gym now and ready to see what the next move is. I don’t know exactly what it is but regardless of who it is I know that I’m in a good position so it’ll be a good fight either way.
“Benavidez is a very, very good fighter, someone I like, I rate, and we were both world champions at the same time down at 168 and it was a fight that I always thought will happen at some point. It probably should’ve happened back then, it didn’t, but now we’re both at 175, it’s a fight that I like. I think stylistically it should be a good one as well. If that’s the next opportunity it ought to be a good one.”
On how advanced talks are with Benavidez’s team
“I have no idea…I think he mentioned he might make me an offer from PBC but there hasn’t been any offer as of yet. So just going to have to sit and wait but hopefully things get moving this week regardless of who it is. I want to know when the next fight is so I can get back in the gym properly.”
On who he’d fight if not Benavidez
“I don’t know. I’m interim champion, it looks like they’re going to do the rematch. So I don’t know what fight makes sense but it’s a good division, there’s a lot of good fights so regardless of who I fight I think it’ll be a good one.”
