The Internazionali BNL d’Italia Round of 128 concluded on Day 2, delivering a packed slate of first-round action at the Foro Italico.

With the European clay swing in full flow, Rome’s red dirt saw a mix of rising stars, seasoned campaigners, and home hopes battling for a spot in the second round.

Leading the charge was Fabian Marozsan, who tamed João Fonseca in a high-quality opener, while veterans like Roberto Bautista Agut and last year’s finalist Nicolas Jarry progressed.

Fans also witnessed Fabio Fogini’s last appearance in the capital, with the 37-year-old announcing before his defeat to Jacob Fearnley that it would be his last. “That’s it for me in Rome,” he said. “I love this crowd, so much passion. (But) It’s been increasingly difficult to return, and so many injuries have occurred. I’m happy with my decision.”

Here’s a rundown of Thursday’s matches, standout results and key talking points.

Fabian Marozsan opened his Internazionali BNL d’Italia campaign with a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over the much-talked-about João Fonseca in Thursday’s first round.

The Hungarian delivered a near-flawless performance, dropping just five points on serve in the opening set and stayed composed through a second-set battle to secure the win in 88 minutes.

Marozsan now faces Andrey Rublev in the second round and has fond memories from Rome after defeating Carlos Alcaraz en route to the fourth round on his 2023 Rome debut.

Fonseca, whom the media have installed as a contender for any tournament he enters, is yet to find his footing on the European clay after early exits in Madrid and the ATP Challenger Tour 175 event in Estoril.

Brazilian hopes remain, however, after qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild outlasted Nuno Borges 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in a three-set thriller. The Brazilian, known for his 2023 Roland Garros stunner over Medvedev, leaned on his heavy groundstrokes to advance.

Elsewhere, Roberto Bautista Agut, 37, secured his first Rome win in four years, defeating home favourite Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-3. The Spaniard, who struck 20 winners, will face 11th seed Tommy Paul in the second round.

Last year’s finalist Nicolas Jarry moved past Hugo Gaston 7-6(4), 6-4 in one hour and 48 minutes. The Chilean will play Francisco Cerundolo next.

Lucky loser Jesper De Jong, who defeated Fonseca in Estoril last week, eased past Alexander Shevchenko 6-2, 6-4.

Mariano Navone set up a second-round clash with Jannik Sinner after defeating Italian Federico Cina 6-3, 6-3.

Alexander Bublik (6-3, 7-6(4) over Roman Safiullin), Luca Nardi (6-3, 6-4 over Flavio Cobolli), and Marcos Giron (3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Madrid quarter-finalist Gabriel Diallo) also advanced.

Alongside Cina, Cobolli, Bellucci and Arnaldi, the final Italian to fall was Fabio Fognini who was dismantled 6-2 6-3 by Jacob Fearnley in 80 minutes.

Fognini isn’t quite the force he was a few years ago, and he announced before the match that this would be his last appearance in Rome.

Naturally, he received a huge crowd reception but couldn’t match Fearnley, who has shot up the rankings this season primarily due to the quality of his forehand.

Instead, it was left to Matteo Gigante to please the home crowd, edging Arthur Rinderknech 7-6(4), 7-6(4) in a 2-hour battle.
