Move over Wooley Swamp, there’s a new “legend” in town.
Former UFC featherweight champion, Ilia Topuria, is returning to the lightweight division after wiping out Alex Volkanovski and Max Holloway, the two biggest names at 145 pounds. His transition will include an updated nickname, which means fighter databases will have to switch from “El Matador” to his legendary new handle.
It’s kinda basic, but at least it beats this abomination.
“‘El Matador’ is something that has accompanied me throughout my entire sporting career, throughout my entire trajectory, and it’s something that’s led me to the new nickname,” Topuria told Mundo Deportivo. “It’s always what I say: You need to believe. You need to see to believe. I believe it first, and then I see it. So the nickname that will accompany me in my next fights is going to be ‘La Leyenda.’”
“La Leyenda” translates to “The Legend” in English.
No word yet on who Topuria will face in his lightweight return, but anyone other than Islam Makhachev feels like a missed opportunity. Since “La Leyenda’s departure, the promotion has booked Volkanovski against red-hot featherweight contender Diego Lopes for the vacant strap.
