Iga Swiatek explains why it is that she often wins very dominantly and loses tightly

Iga Swiatek says her dominant wins can be explained by the fact that she never takes the pedal off the gas, while her tight losses mean that is not an easy rival to beat.

It is not a secret that when the five-time Grand Slam champion is on, no one dominates better than her. Over the last couple of seasons, the Pole has won numerous sets with 6-0 or 6-1 scorelines – she has led the WTA Tour in that department in each of the seasons since 2022.

On Friday, Swiatek started her Indian Wells run with an impressive 6-0 6-2 win over 2022 WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia. That was already the sixth set that the 23-year-old had won with a 6-0 scoreline in 2025.

Swiatek on how it is that she often wins in straightforward ways but loses in tight ways

“I mean, there are many reasons. I don’t know… It’s just that I’m solid no matter what the score is, and I don’t take next games for granted. If I’m leading even 4-0, I know that I should keep playing the same way and keep the same attitude to just win the match,” the world No. 2 explained.

“But for sure, you know, the matches that I lose are usually much tighter, which means that it’s harder to win against me, I guess. But it doesn’t matter. I’m going to have matches that are huge battles and easy matches, but you can never expect and you can never just try to predict. Doesn’t make sense.”

Since Swiatek’s breakthrough 2022 season, there have been only a handful of matches where she was the one who got dominated. One of those matches came last month, when Jelena Ostapenko ousted the Pole 6-3 6-1 in Doha.

Meanwhile, the Polish tennis star plays Dayana Yastremska in the Indian Wells third round. In their last match – which came in Dubai last month – the world No. 2 registered a bagel set and beat the Ukrainian 7-5 6-0.
