Gujarat Titans assistant coach Aashish Kapoor backed Shubman Gill’s leadership skills during IPL 2025 amid reports over Gill taking over India’s red-ball captaincy.
Kapoor loves the evolution of Gill as a skipper, and it is similar to MS Dhoni, referring to composed growth as a leader. This is Gill’s second season as a skipper, but the young batter is looking solid with his leadership qualities.

Aashish Kapoor praises Shubman Gill’s leadership qualities
Gujarat team’s assistant coach praised Shubman Gill’s leadership maturity as he balances the team strategies with his personal performance in the field.
Gill’s leadership skills are coming out at the right time when the BCCI is looking for a new skipper for the red-ball format. Gill is playing a crucial role for his IPL franchise and leading his side well in the ground.
Aashish Kapoor compares Shubman Gill and MS Dhoni
Kapoor stated the similarities between MS Dhoni and Shubman Gill, as Gill is facing backlash from some former players that he doesn’t have much experience in captaining team at International level.
Kapoor silenced the critics by stating that when Dhoni became the skipper of the Indian team, he was also not captained anywhere.
“When (MS) Dhoni was made captain for the World Cup for the first time, he was not captain anywhere. So nobody knew, 10 years, 12 years down the line, he is going to be one of the world’s best captains,” Kapoor said.
“If you had asked somebody at that point in time, including Dhoni, what do you think of your captaincy? There would be no answer. So you have to see a person over a period of time before you can make any judgment on them. And he has not even started,” Gujarat’s assistant coach added.
Gill is the front-runner to become the new skipper of India’s Test team. In the ongoing IPL season, he has already gone past 600+ runs in the tournament.
Shubman Gill’s record as skipper
Gill hasn’t lead India in ODIs and the Test cricket but he made his captaincy debut in Zimbabwe in June 2924 just after T20I World Cup.
Gill won his first series as a captain by 4-1 and also scored the most runs in the series.
The right-hand batter got the opportunity to lead Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2024, but his debut season didn’t go well as Titans were eliminated from the tournament in the league stage after qualifying for the IPL finals twice.
Gill won 14 out of 24 matches as a skipper in the IPL, and in IPL 2025, Gujarat have already qualified for the playoffs, and they are currently at the top of the table.
