Emma Raducanu is dealing with a physical issue at the start of the grass season but not everything is dark as the British tennis player remains hopeful that she will be able to manage the injury and have her back hold up in the next couple of weeks.
The week before the French Open, the world No. 37 required a medical timeout for a back issue during a Strasbourg round-of-16 loss. The 22-year-old managed to take part at Roland Garros and even win her opening match but kept being troubled by the back spasms and exited the tournament in the second round.
Now, Raducanu reveals that it took her some time after the French Open to get back in the state where she could go out there and practice.
“I have had a small interruption with a back spasm again so that was a bit annoying. That kind of hindered my grass prep, but the last few days I have managed to get on the grass and just begin to feel my feet. I can’t really predict the future, and how it’s going to be. I know I’ve been managing my back for the last few weeks now," the 2021 US Open champion shared in her pre-tournament presser at the Queen's Club.
Raducanu doesn't want to let the injury impact her mentality
Raducanu openly admitted that her situation is far from ideal at the start of this year's grass swing. However, she wants to focus on "the right things" and just hope for the best.
“But I try not to let it get to me, because I think I have a pretty good feel of when it happens what to do and how to manage it. It does take a few days out, but all I can do is kind of deal with what’s in front of me," the 22-year-old added.
Meanwhile, Raducanu plays Cristina Bucsa in the Queen's first round.
If everything goes fine with her back, the British tennis player should also compete in Berlin, Eastbourne and Wimbledon during the grass season.
