WBA welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis (15-0, 9 KOs) is hoping to win over some new fans, quiet some doubters and put the boots to one of boxing’s best.
The Kaunas, Lithuania-born champion is prepped for what will undoubtedly be the toughest fight of his 8-year career.
Stanionis will face fellow unbeaten IBF boss Jaron “Boots” Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) on April 12 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., the sight of many classic wars back in the 90s.
Ennis, coming in with over twice as many wins and more than 3 times as many KOs, is a steep test, to put it mildly. “Boots” has been a champion since 2023 and has made 3 defenses of his IBF title.
Stanionis is trained by long-time Wild Card trainer Marvin Somodio, who studied under legend Freddie Roach. Stanionis is excited for a fight in which he sees himself winning over some doubters. He’d also like to win “Boot’s” IBF title to add to the WBA strap he won in 2022.
One of the best things he has going for him heading into the fight is the strong chemistry with trainer Somodio who is a great fit for the champion.
In discussing the recently wrapped camp, Stanionis said, “Even though I hadn’t fought in a while, Marvin and I picked up right where we left off. We work well together, and we’re making all the right changes to be in top shape”, he said. “Training has gone really well, and I’m focused and ready for this fight.”
Not only is Ennis considered the best welterweight in the world, but some backers also label him as one of the best fighters in the world. A seemingly daunting challenge for Stanionis, but he’s up for the task.
“Many people think Ennis will win, but I am here to surprise everyone,” said Stanionis. “I have worked my whole career for this fight, and on April 12 I will give everything to win these titles and show I am the best welterweight in the world”, he said. “He’s got plans? I’m here to f*** up his plans”.
