In such a tight-knit community of South Carolina women’s basketball, few relationships run deeper than that of head coach Dawn Staley and associate head coach Lisa Boyer.
Boyer and Staley’s story goes far beyond South Carolina’s title runs, all the way to 1996 when she was Boyer’s player with the Philadelphia Rage in the now-defunct American Basketball League.
So on Boyer’s very special day, Staley’s heartfelt displays of affection and gratitude remind everyone why their relationship has become legendary in collegiate sports.
Dawn Staley Honors Lisa Boyer with a Message Full of Love and Respect
The Twitter account for South Carolina Women’s Basketball wished Boyer a happy birthday with a quirky video of the associate head coach responding to questions in a rapid-fire format.
The video disclosed some personal facts, like her dream vacation spots being Greece or Italy, and her comfort food being gooey chocolate chip cookies. This lighthearted content really allowed Boyer to show some of her personality beyond her serious coaching facade and for fans to see the woman behind the whistle.

But Staley’s response truly captured the essence of their extraordinary partnership. Retweeting the birthday post, Staley wrote: “There isn’t a soul in our program that gives every single ounce like @coachboyer BOYER, which is what we famously call her. On this very special day, please help wish my rock a happy, super fantastic birthday. You deserve your day and every day to be filled with only your heart’s desire.”

Staley’s words are tied with tremendous emotional weight and reflect a relationship built through years of success, challenges, and loyalty. As they began to succeed, they laid the groundwork for what would come later.
When Staley transitioned to coaching at Temple University in 2000, she knew who she wanted to be by her side. Boyer joined Staley’s staff in 2002, and the two began working together.
It was the beginning of their professional careers together. Finally, in 2008, they both found their way to South Carolina, where Boyer was promoted to associate head coach in 2010.
The connection between the two runs deeper than a normal coaching relationship. Back in 2018, Staley wrote on social media: “Boyer!! We are that old married couple that started young and will grow old together.” While it may have created some gasps with fans, it was an appropriate way to illustrate their personal and professional connection.
