Novak Djokovic made it through the first round of the 2025 Roland Garros by defeating American ace Mackenzie McDonald in three sets over the iconic Philippe Chatrier. The legend from Belgrade had no particular problems during his first match in the French capital, where he is hunting for the third title of his extraordinary career.
The former world No.1 was a bit angry during the first set because the strong wind and rain disturbed him, which is why he asked the chair umpire several times to close the roof. In the end, his request was granted and the 24-time Grand Slam champion was able to play his best tennis in front of the French crowd.
The feeling is that Nole's level is increasing as the matches go by and the triumph in Geneva last week has given him back some confidence, if you consider that he lifted his 100th trophy by writing another page of history.
Moutet on facing Djokovic
The 38-year-old from Belgrade will face local idol Corentin Moutet in the second round of the French Open and will have to be very careful of the unpredictable French player, who has a different tennis than most players and will be supported by his fans.
Interviewed on the eve of the match against the Serbian champion, Moutet confessed that he is ready for this challenge: "I will try to use all my talent to create as many problems as possible for him. I am very happy to be able to face a legend of our sport. I played against Rafael Nadal here a few years ago, which is why I'm just as proud to share the court with Nole. I wasn't lucky with the draw, I could have had an easier second round."
Djokovic and Moutet have already faced each other twice on the professional tour – in Paris-Bercy in 2019 and Rome in 2024 respectively – with Nole prevailing in straight sets on both occasions.
Corentin will try to put the Serbian in trouble tomorrow, but it is clear that the outcome of the match will depend a lot on Novak's level.
