Novak Djokovic will still have a chance to get some wins on clay before the French Open as the world No. 6 has accepted a main draw wildcard into an ATP 250 tournament in Geneva, via Swiss newspaper Le Temps.
This spring, the 37-year-old is having probably the most challenging clay season of his career after losing to Alejandro Tabilo in his Monte Carlo Masters opener and then also getting bounced by Matteo Arnaldi in his first Madrid Masters match. After starting his clay year with a 0-2 record, the former world No. 1 decided not to play at the Rome Open and instead returned to the practice court.
And today, Djokovic took a main draw wildcard into the Geneva tournament, which is slated to take place between May 18-24.
Last year, the Serb also played in Geneva the week before the French Open. In his debut at the Swiss ATP 250 tournament, he reached the semifinal before losing to Tomas Machac.
However, Geneva prepared Djokovic well for the French Open as he reached the quarterfinal at Roland Garros before an unfortunate knee injury forced him to withdraw from the rest of the tournament.
Djokovic will be hoping to get some momentum in Geneva
After losing to Arnaldi in two sets in Madrid, the record 24-time Grand Slam champion pretty much said that he had to accept his new reality – and that is not being dominant anymore.
“I’m always trying to be optimistic, and I know what I’m capable of. But again, things are different, obviously, with my strokes, with my body, with my movement. It’s the reality that I have to accept. I’ll try to make the most of these new circumstances, particularly in Grand Slams, where it counts the most for me, at least where I would like to do my best. So let’s see what happens," Djokovic said two weeks ago.
For Djokovic, the ideal case scenario would be making a deep run in Geneva and boosting his confidence ahead of the French Open.
