Mike Woodson’s return to his coaching roots in the NBA appears imminent.
A report on Saturday evening from Sam Amick of The Athletic indicated that Woodson is a “leading candidate” for the top assistant job on the Sacramento staff under Doug Christie.
That was followed by a report Tuesday from KCRA that Woodson is joining the Kings’ new staff.
From the KCRA report:
“Mike Woodson, a former Kings player with NBA head coaching experience, and fan favorite Bobby Jackson, also a former King, who even served previously as an assistant coach with the organization, will be hired as assistant coaches.
“Multiple sources told KCRA 3’s Sean Cunningham that both Woodson and Jackson will join the coaching staff of Doug Christie, who recently signed a multi-year deal with the Kings to be their next head coach. Those sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the hiring of assistant coaches was not yet official.”

The 67-year-old Woodson spent the last four seasons as Indiana’s head coach. He compiled an 82-53 record overall and a 41-39 mark in Big Ten games.
The Indianapolis native reached the NCAA tournament in 2022 and 2023 before missing the postseason in 2024 and 2025.
In February, Indiana announced Woodson’s plans to step down after the 2024-25 season. The Hoosiers finished 19-13 and were one of the first teams out of the NCAA tournament.
Indiana hired Darian DeVries to replace Woodson on March 18.
Woodson began his coaching career in 1996 as an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks. He has also worked as an assistant in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Detroit and New York.
He spent nine seasons as a head coach in the NBA with Atlanta and New York and went 315-365.
