Aryna Sabalenka started off her winner's speech by congratulating Coco Gauff before expressing her desire to meet the American many more times on the biggest stage.
On Saturday, the top-ranked Belarusian overcame the fourth-seeded American 6-3 7-6 (3) to win her third Madrid title. By doing so, she also level her head-to-head against the 2023 US Open champion, which now stands at 5-5.
Since their 2023 US Open final clash, Gauff and Sabalenka have had three semifinal meetings and this past Madrid final battle. The American won their first final at Flushing Meadows two years ago but the Belarusian got her revenge in Madrid.
Sabalenka to Gauff: I hope we play many more finals and I win them all
“The first thing I want to do is congratulate Coco and her team for all the work they're doing. I hope we see each other in many finals, and I hope I win them (laughs), but you're a great fighter. I love your fighting spirit,” the 26-year-old Belarusian told Gauff during the on-court trophy presentation.
Because of its altitude and conditions, Madrid has one of the fastest clay courts on the Tour. And it is safe to say that the Belarusian tennis star thrives in those conditions since she has made four finals at Caja Magica since 2021 and won three titles.
“Thanks to all the sponsors, to (tournament director) Feliciano (Lopez). You're doing an incredible job. And to you, the fans. I love Madrid. Thank you for your support. I really enjoy playing at the Caja Mágica, and you're the best. Thank you to everyone who makes the tournament possible," Sabalenka said.
Against Gauff, the top seed came up big in some key moments and avoided any drama. In the second set, the American led 5-3 and even had a set point before the Belarusian stormed back to win in two sets.
Sabalenka now heads to Rome, where she will try to make her fifth consecutive final.
