Padres first baseman Luis Arraez was released from the hospital after a frightening scene on Sunday.
Arraez bunted to first base and attempted to beat Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubon to the bag, but collided with Dubon in what The Post’s Jon Heyman described as “one of the scariest collisions you’ll ever see.”
Arraez was well enough to be released from the hospital in just a few hours despite being stretchered off the field.
“Best-case scenario with Luis,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said after the game. “Obviously, very scary. We think he’s, for the most part, out of the woods. Time will tell, but the initial testing is very favorable. No fractures of any sort. A little bit of laceration on his jawline, so we’re worried about his jaw, clearly his cervical region.”
Shildt added that Arraez had passed concussion protocol, although there was a scary moment where he “wasn’t aware of where he was” after the collision.
After the game, Arraez, freshly released from the hospital, rejoined his teammates in the clubhouse after a 3-2 defeat of the Astros.
The 2023 MLB batting champion is a major piece to the Padres’ offense, batting second behind superstar outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr.
A timetable has not yet been set for Arraez.
The jawline laceration could force him to miss some time, though it’s unclear if that will force him to be placed on the Injured List.
San Diego has an MLB-best 16-6 record coming into Monday, holding a half-game lead on the Dodgers in the NL West.
