Lopes (26-7) and Volkanovski (27-4) went the distance with the vacant 145-pound championship on the line inside Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. Volkanovski became a two-time featherweight champion winning via unanimous decision.
The bout was competitive with Lopes knocking “The Great” down late in the second round. The match was named ‘Fight of the Night’ and the two banked an extra $50,000 bonus.
Lopes’ road to the UFC was a long one. The 30-year old made his professional debut in September 2012. After 22 fights and riding a seven-fight winning streak, Lopes got the opportunity to compete on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021. He lost to Joanderson Brito and it would take two more years to get the call from UFC matchmakers.
He made his octagon debut against Movsar Evloev at UFC 288 in May 2023. Although Lopes lost by unanimous decision to Evloev, the bout earned ‘Fight of the Night’ honors. Following the loss, Lopes reeled off a five-fight winning streak that landed him in the UFC 314 title bout.
