Field Gulls will be busy covering the NFL Draft this time next Thursday; there will even have some on-site coverage this year, stay tuned! In the meantime, let’s do something fun instead of debate whether or not the Seattle Seahawks should draft a guard at No. 18 or if a tight end in the first round is poor value.
While the Seahawks are in their 50th season of existence, Field Gulls is about to embark on its 20th season! Field Gulls’ birthday is June 16, and you can read the introductory article by Paul Pearson (aka Shrug) here! How did the Field Gulls name ever materialize anyway? It’s all Shrug’s idea.
I admit I came up with the title. Upon giving me this gig, the fine folks at SportsBlogs asked me to come up with five to ten possible titles. Field Gulls, while catchy and easily URLed, was not my first choice.
That would have been one of these:
Where Waterfowls Dare
Hawkwind
The 12th Blog
The first title, I admit, is long-winded. The second is also the name of a defunct progressive rock band, which might have given us copyright problems even though the band doesn’t exist anymore. The third is alphanumeric, which doesn’t really scan well, and also would have caused Texas A&M to break into hysterical sobbing and, for all we know, frivolous litigation. There is also another Seahawks blog called The 12th Man, and the similarities were perhaps too close for comfort.
For today’s open thread I want to know your Field Gulls discovery story. How long have how been reading Field Gulls? How long have you been a registered member of FG? When did you discover this site and through what means? Was there any specific article that got you hooked? Do any of you even remember Scruffy Lefty? I ask all these questions because, quite frankly, I don’t remember my origin story but I can tell you I’ve been reading Field Gulls since 2007… I was only barely a teenager back then and now I’m in my 30s with increasing strands of graying hair.
