Rory McIlroy has been invited to Old Trafford by Manchester United coach, Ruben Amorin. The Northern Irishman completed the career Grand Slam on Sunday after seeing off Justin Rose in a play-off at Augusta National. McIlroy also ended his long wait for a major title in the process and his success has not gone unnoticed by those at Old Trafford.
Why Amorim Wants McIlroy At Old Trafford
McIlroy is a big fan of Manchester United, and the 35-year-old will be delighted to be invited to the Theatre of Dreams. Manchester United have been underperforming this season and they are currently nailed on for their worst ever Premier League finish. Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim replaced Erik Ten Hag almost midway through the season but the team’s form has failed to convince and Amorim has only won six of his 21 league games in charge.
United currently languish in 14th place and lost 4-1 to Newcastle over the weekend when McIlroy completed his career Grand Slam. The Europa League represents United’s only chance of returning to Europe next season but the Red Devils drew 1-1 away at Lyon last week in the first leg of the quarter finals. As United prepare to host the French team in the second, Amorim has invited the Masters winner to Old Trafford in a bid to boost the morale of his team ahead of the crucial match.
“It is really important to us in this moment,” Amorim said in a video message released Wednesday. “You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible and we want that feeling in our stadium. So, I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet you.”
McIlroy To Honor Old Trafford Invite
The world No. 2 is prepared to honor Ruben Amorim’s invitation to Old Trafford. The 35-year-old became just the sixth player in history to complete the career Grand Slam after he defeated Justin Rose in a dramatic play-off on Sunday.
McIlroy confirmed that he would be honoring the invitation to attend Old Trafford in a press conference shortly after the invite video was released. The 35-year-old is determined to inspire his team as they bid to end the season on a high by winning the Europa League.
“If I can inspire some better play, absolutely,” he said laughing when asked if he would be taking the Masters trophy along with him to Old Trafford.
Manchester United are one of the most successful Premier League team with 20 league titles but they haven’t won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. In addition, their arch rivals, Liverpool are on course to win a record-equalling 20th league title this season as they lead their nearest challengers, Arsenal, by 13 points with only six games to play.
