Undefeated Cuban Yoenis Tellez (9-0, 7 KOs) is looking to grab the spotlight and make some serious noise in the 154-pound division when he takes on former unified champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams. They will meet for the Interim WBA Super Welterweight title on a loaded PBC Pay-Per-View card from Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, March 1.
Despite only having 9 fights under his belt, and facing a former world champion in Williams, Tellez is very confident he will record his 10th win and walk out of New York a champion. He is completing training camp in Texas with legend Ronnie Shields and is very excited to make his “Big Apple” debut.
Despite the Texas-based Tellez being one of the hottest contenders in the 154-pound division, he won’t have an easy task on his hands in Williams (29-4-1, 17 KOs). The Philadelphia-based former champion has faced a host of championship calibre fighters in Joachim Alcine, Jermall Charlo, Ishe Smith, Jarrett Hurd, Jeison Rosario, Carlos Adames, among others, in his career.
Youth and potential might side with Tellez but world class experience is with Williams.
In recent interviews, Tellez made it clear that he knows this is a chance to shine on a big card, win a world title in only his 10th bout and show everyone in the junior middleweight division that he is indeed the real thing.
“Training in Texas with Coach Ronnie has been incredible as always,” said Tellez. “Every day we focus on the little details that matter, refine my technique, and make sure I’m in the best shape possible. Ronnie brings a wealth of knowledge, and I’ve grown a lot under his guidance”, he said.
And while he understands Williams has the edge in experience, he welcomes the challenge and is very excited to be clocking into work in New York.
“Julian Williams is a former world champion with a lot of experience but I’m going to come with everything I’ve got. I have a style that is exciting, and I’m confident in my ability to execute our game plan”, he said. “This is a huge opportunity for me, and I’m ready to show the world what I’m capable of. Fighting at Barclays Center in Brooklyn is a dream come true,” he continued. “New York has held some of the biggest fights in boxing history, and I’m excited to perform on such a big stage for the first time”.
Tellez also knows a title win puts him in the mix for fights with all the established names in the division.
“A win in this fight solidifies me as the top contender at 154-pounds,” said Tellez. “My goal is to win in spectacular fashion and be squarely in position to face Jermell Charlo, Terence Crawford and Sebastian Fundora.”
