The Florida Panthers might be heading into a busy offseason. According to multiple reports, the team is leaning toward letting veteran forward Brad Marchand walk in free agency to make room for two key pieces: Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad.
Panthers Could Let Brad Marchand Walk to Keep Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad
The main focus for the Panthers right now is the Stanley Cup Finals, where the series against the Edmonton Oilers is tied at two. But behind the scenes, some major roster decisions are already starting to take shape.
NHL insider David Pagnotta reports that Florida is “pretty much locked in” on keeping Bennett long-term. Talks are said to be progressing on an eight-year deal worth around $64 million ($8 million per season). At 28, Bennett continues to play a central role for the Panthers, especially in the postseason. He’s brought grit, offense, and a reliable two-way presence.
But cap space is tight, and the Panthers can’t afford to keep everyone.
Marchand, who joined the team via trade on an expiring contract, is expected to test free agency this summer. His asking price could be steep, and with limited cap space, Florida may not be able to match what other teams might offer.
All Eyes on Bennett and Ekblad
Bennett isn’t the only player the Panthers hope to hold onto. Aaron Ekblad, their longtime No. 1 defenseman, is also due for a new contract. His eight-year, $60 million deal expires on July 1, and while he’s made it clear he’d like to stay, no extension has been finalized yet.
Florida heads into the summer with just over $19 million in cap space and 16 players already signed. Balancing the books won’t be easy, especially when trying to retain both Bennett and Ekblad.
Ekblad has been with the Panthers since they picked him first overall in 2014. He leads the team’s defensemen in nearly every stat that matters and has remained a core piece despite dealing with injuries and a suspension. In this year’s playoffs, he’s been solid again, notching 12 points in 17 games so far.
The Panthers may be forced into a tough choice: extend Bennett or keep Ekblad. If it comes down to one or the other, signs point toward Bennett being the priority. Both sides want to get a deal done, and that mutual interest could speed things along.
Elsewhere in the league, Ottawa is rumored to be watching the Ekblad situation closely. If the Panthers can’t work out a deal, the Senators could step in. Adding Ekblad next to Jake Sanderson would give Ottawa a dependable top pair, something they’ve been seeking for a while.
For now, Florida is focused on trying to win it all. But once the Cup is awarded, the front office will need to act quickly. Bennett looks like he’ll be staying. Ekblad? That’s still up in the air.
