Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer is with the team in San Diego, per The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya. The Dodgers have not named a starter for Tuesday’s game at Petco Park, and it could be the reason Sauer has joined the big league team.

It’s possible that Sauer will be with the Dodgers Monday on taxi squad, before being called up officially to start Tuesday. Tony Gonsolin was originally supposed to start Tuesday against the Padres; however, the 31-year-old was placed on the injured list with right elbow discomfort over the weekend.
Gonsolin’s departure left the Dodgers rotation with just three staple starters in ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw, and Dustin May.
In seven Major League games this season, Sauer has a 3.05 ERA with 13 strikeouts and 0.919 WHIP across 20.2 innings pitched. The right-hander has made one start for the Dodgers this season, and appears to be on track to make his second of the year against L.A.’s bitter rival.
With Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, Sauer is sporting a 3.97 ERA with 20 strikeouts and 1.147 WHIP across five starts.
Sauer was last recalled when the Dodgers placed star reliever Evan Phillips on the IL in early May.
