Joe Rogan is a fan of mixed martial arts (MMA) and he’s tired of seeing “fat” heavyweights inside of the cage. Instead, the UFC color commentator wishes things would go back to the good old days when guys like Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar were jacked to the gills.
Rogan has been around to witness UFC’s incredible rise from “dangerous sport” to global enterprise and he’s seen a lot of different types of athletes along the way. This includes a wave of new drug testing in 2015 compliments of USADA that forever changed the landscape of the sport. Believe it or not, Rogan preferred the era before USADA when massive heavyweights were roaming around.
“USADA—when UFC brought in USADA, all of that changed and people’s physiques melted,” said Rogan during a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. “They changed dramatically. Alistair Overeem’s the greatest example. Alistair when he fought Brock Lesnar got drug tested, and he was saucy as f—k.
“When he’s flexing on stage, that’s when he’s ‘Ubereem’—260 [pounds], solid as f—k, ripped and just one of the more elite strikers on planet Earth and Brock was f—ked.”
Nowadays, there are a lot of out of shape heavyweights competing under the UFC banner. There are some outliers like Tom Aspinall, Jailton Almeida, Sergei Pavlovich, and Ciryl Gane, but nobody that really comes close to what UFC heavyweights used to look like. That’s why Rogan wants heavyweight fighters back on the juice.
“Oh yeah, I want fun,” said Rogan followed by a laugh. “I don’t want to see fat heavyweights. Get the f—k out of here. I want Alistair back. Get them back on the sauce.”
What do you think, fight fans? Do you want UFC heavyweights back on the secret juice or prefer an even playing field for all?
