Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) overpowered Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 42 runs at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow, in a thrilling IPL 2025 encounter on May 23. The defeat has put RCB’s hopes for top-two finish in jeopardy, with their fate now hinging on their final league match and the outcome of the Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.
After being put into bat, SRH put on a show, amassing a massive 231/6 in 20 overs. Abhishek Sharma got off to a fiery start, scoring a quick 34 off 17 balls while Ishan Kishan played a sensational knock, hammering an unbeaten 94 off just 48 deliveries with five sixes and seven boundaries.
SRH captain Pat Cummins provided the finishing touches with a brisk unbeaten 13, pushing the total beyond 230 as RCB bowlers were taken to the cleaners. Romario Shepherd was the only one who could leave a mark taking two wickets for 14 runs in the two overs he bowled.
In response, RCB started strongly thanks to Phil Salt’s explosive 62 off 32 and Virat Kohli’s attacking 43. However, once Salt fell with RCB at 129 for 3, the middle and lower order crumbled under pressure as RCB collapsed from 173 for 3 to 189 all out in 19.5 overs.
Cummins led from the front with the ball too, picking up three wickets for just 28 runs. Eshan Malinga was the standout bowler, finishing with two for 37, ensuring RCB never recovered from the middle-order collapse as he dismissed Tim David and Romario Shepherd in quick succession.
SRH will play their last league match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 25, whereas RCB will face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their last fixture on May 27.
