Raul Marquez and Lupe Contreras have both spent years inside boxing rings. And, the result is that lately they are both sounding punchy.
But that is good news for fight fans as their newly launched podcast – “Raul Marquez is Punchy with Lupe Contreras”, is up and running. Two industry veterans who bring as many laughs as left hooks to the proceedings.
Marquez, who currently trains his undefeated welterweight son (13-0, 6 KOs), Gio, needs little introduction to fight fans as a former world champion. His career spanned from being a U.S. Olympian as an amateur to a 16-year pro who faced some of boxing’s best in 47 pro bouts.
At 24-0, by the end of 1996, he captured the IBF super welterweight title in January 1997. He would (amazingly, by today’s fighter schedules) fight 4 more times that year, making 3 title defences before losing the title to Yori Boy Campas in December.
Over the next decade of his career, he would fight 2 more times for the world title and face the likes of Fernando Vargas, Shane Mosley, Jermain Taylor, Bronco McKart, and Arthur Abraham in that run.
For fellow Houston, Texas-native, and show host, Lupe Contreras, he likes to joke that he “yells into microphones for a living”. While that is indeed true, he leaves out that he is perhaps in the top 3 of boxing’s most revered announcers in the game today. He has had a long and distinguished career behind the microphone for countless world championship cards on all of boxing’s biggest platforms. Switching back and forth from his native Spanish to (perfect) English has allowed Contreras to endear himself to fight fans the world over.
So, the Texas twosome decided to bring their skills, experience, and humour to the airwaves for what is turning out to be an informative and very entertaining podcast. Contreras brings vast experience from all levels of shows he has worked over the years. Meanwhile, Marquez brings firsthand experience from his time as a fighter and later an announcer.
They team up to delve into the biggest fights, fighters, punches, and punchlines out there. With their reach, don’t be surprised to see some of the game’s biggest stars as guests on upcoming episodes.
