Monday Morning Hangover: What’s next for Belal Muhammad after coughing up title at UFC 315?

UFC 315 took place last Sat. night (May 10, 2025) inside Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, streaming on ESPN+ pay-per-view (PPV), leaving several fighters feeling the post-fight blues.

Among them was Alexa Grasso, who suffered her second straight loss after coming up short against Natalia Silva. And Bruno Silva, who lost his fifth straight fight and was carried out on a stretcher after getting knocked out by Marc-Andre Barriault (see it again here).

But, which fighter is suffering from the worst post-fight hangover, now a few days removed from the show?

Belal Muhammad.

Coming into the event, Muhammad was amped to (finally) get the opportunity to defend his 170-pound strap nearly a year after taking it from Leon Edwards. “Remember The Name” was slated to face Shavkat Rakhmonov before “Nomad’s” health issues forced him out. Stepping in was an equally-dangerous foe in the form of Jack Della Maddalena, who earned the title opportunity by winning his first eight fights under the UFC banner.

And once the action started, Muhammad knew he was in for a fight.

In what proved to be a rather entertaining affair, both combatants gave it all they could muster and went back-and-forth for 25 minutes. Toward the end of the fight, it was clear who was getting the best of the striking exchanges, as “Remember The Name” was looking pretty rough (see his busted up face here). In the fifth round, “JDM” really took his striking up a notch, piecing up the champ at-will.

In the end, Della Maddalena did enough to convince the judges to award him the unanimous decision, leaving Muhammad looking worse for wear … and without his belt (highlights here).

While Muhammad put up a great fight, abandoning his wrestling (which got him to the top of the division) wound up costing him the gold, relying too much on his “Canelo Hands” to get the job done.

“Allah’s plan is the best plan Alhamdillah for everything,” Muhammad wrote on social media. “Thank you to all my supporters. I been here before and I’ll be back.”

The ex-champ now has a tall mountain to climb if he ever wants to get back to a title shot. That’s because Muhammad’s grapple-heavy offensive attack doesn’t seem to appeal to most “Just Bleed” fight fans.

The loss was the first in five years for “Remember The Name,” so racking up consecutive wins isn’t anything new for him. He will need to collect a few more victories before he gets back into title fight consideration, so perhaps taking on the loser of the upcoming UFC Atlanta fight between Kamaru Usman vs. Joaquin Buckley is in order.

A win over either contender would be a step in the right direction for Muhammad. There’s potential heat, too.
